Japanese Flower Calendar
In Japan flowers and plant materials have special and symbolic meanings. These meanings are seasonal and based on the time of flowering. The Japanese flower calendar takes us through the year and for centuries the flower of the month has been used for traditional artistic pursuits, the Rimpa painters of Japan painted seasonal paintings incorporating the flowers of the season and Ikebana artists use the flower of the month for traditional and realistic designs in their individual schools. Poets also wrote special haiku drawing their inspiration from seasonal plants and flowers, truly a source of inspiration to all artists.
The calendar is as follows:
JANUARY Pine. Matsu
FEBRUARY Plum. Ume
MARCH. Peach. Momo
APRIL. Cherry. Sakura
MAY. Iris. Shobu
JUNE Peony. Botan
JULY Morning Glory. Asago
AUGUST Lotus. Hasu
SEPTEMBER. Seven Grasses of Autumn. Akino nanakusa
OCTOBER. Chrysanthemum. Kiku
NOVEMBER. Maple. Momiji
DECEMBER. Camelia. Tsubaki
In my classes we often use the flower of the month in our arrangements. To view the upcoming classes, click below.
