Designed for senior students who wish to deepen their understanding of Hana Isho and explore the artistic expression of Rimpa-style arrangements.
In Advanced Hana Isho, students will study One Row, Circular, and Radial styles, each incorporating a third line and material to introduce greater depth and complexity. Particular attention is given to precise placement, allowing the natural form of each flower to guide the composition. These advanced techniques focus on refining balance, spatial structure, and the expressive qualities of line and form within each design.
The second part of the class focuses on Rimpa, a style inspired by the classical Japanese art movement of the same name. Unlike traditional ikebana, Rimpa is not a conventional flower arrangement but a recreation of painted scenes using plant materials. Drawing on the bold colours, layered textures, and seasonal motifs found in Rimpa art, this style seeks to translate the spirit of a painting into a three-dimensional floral expression. Elements of wabi-sabi—the beauty found in imperfection and impermanence—are also embraced in this artistic approach.
This session encourages both technical precision and creative interpretation, offering senior members the opportunity to expand their practice through structure, symbolism, and seasonal awareness.
All day classes are £50. You will also need to purchase the flowers separately which can cost anything up to £20 extra.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
As the discipline of Ikebana follows a strict curriculum, if you are new to Ikebana, you will start at the beginning of the curriculum for any class you attend. You can find the curriculum here.
