Rimpa/Bunjin
Rimpa is a classical Japanese art style, originally a school of painting from the Edo period, known for bold compositions, decorative rhythm, and stylized depictions of nature. In Ikebana, Rimpa translates these painterly qualities into floral arrangements, emphasizing horizontal movement, clustered materials, negative space, and expressive “front-facing” presentation.
In this advanced class, students explore Rimpa through flowers, foliage, and containers, creating arrangements that capture the elegance, rhythm, and visual impact of the Rimpa aesthetic. The session focuses on balance, proportion, and spatial harmony while encouraging creative interpretation within this unique tradition. Designed for students with a solid foundation in Ohara techniques, the class deepens both technical skill and artistic expression.
For advanced students, the class includes an introduction to Bunjin Theory, a contemporary Ikebana style influenced by Chinese painters. Bunjin embraces asymmetry and a free-flowing approach, focusing on personal expression and the natural beauty of materials rather than rigid structure.
All day classes are £50. You will also need to purchase the flowers separately which can cost anything up to £20 extra.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
As the discipline of Ikebana follows a strict curriculum, if you are new to Ikebana, you will start at the beginning of the curriculum for any class you attend. You can find the curriculum here.
