All-day: HANA MAI TO HANA KANADE

  • Harbridge, Court Barn Lane Chichester, England, PO20 United Kingdom (map)

Hana Mai to Hana Kanade
This class explores two expressive and creative Ohara School styles: Hana Mai and Hana Kanade.

Hana Mai, meaning “dancing flowers,” is a sculptural form of ikebana rather than a traditional arrangement. It focuses on movement and rhythm, where flowers and materials are composed to suggest flow and interaction within space.

Hana Kanade is a contemporary style developed by the current headmaster, featuring the technique of crossing lines. This approach introduces greater complexity, emphasising the interplay of angles, structure, and spatial tension within the arrangement.

Through guided, hands-on practice, students will explore the characteristics of both styles and develop their own compositions. Attention will be given to line, balance, and spatial awareness, supporting a clear understanding of each approach.

Suitable for students at all levels.

All day classes are £50. You will also need to purchase the flowers separately which can cost anything up to £20 extra.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

As the discipline of Ikebana follows a strict curriculum, if you are new to Ikebana, you will start at the beginning of the curriculum for any class you attend. You can find the curriculum here.
